Impaired lymph flow following surgery
The lymphatic system plays a central role in the post-operative recovery process. It ensures the circulation of fluids throughout the body, helps eliminate cellular waste, and supports the immune system. After surgery, this system is temporarily slowed down. Inflammation may cause additional fluid buildup and diminish the drainage of tissues.
Vodder lymphatic drainage instead of the conventional method
Vodder lymphatic drainage is a type of MLD (manual lymphatic drainage) developed in the 1930s by Dr. Emil Vodder. It is a gentle therapeutic method designed to stimulate the circulation of the lymphatic fluid throughout the body. During MLD sessions, the practitioner performs slow, rhythmic, superficial, and precisely defined movements using the fingers and palms of the hands.
Unlike a traditional lymphatic drainage massage, which primarily works on the muscles using deeper pressure, the Vodder method targets the superficial lymphatic system to support the natural flow of fluids toward the lymph nodes the body’s central lymphatic filters . The treatment is not intended to relax muscle fibers but rather to stimulate lymphatic circulation and promote the elimination of fluids accumulated in the tissues.
Vodder lymphatic drainage offers numerous benefits for our patients during the post-operative recovery phase. The massages are painless, non-invasive, and particularly well-suited for tissues after the surgery.
Tangible effects on postoperative inflammation
Vodder lymphatic drainage significantly reduces the tissue inflammation, swelling, and fluid buildup. It acts preventatively in several ways.
1. Reduce oedema
By facilitating the elimination of excess interstitial fluid, the Vodder method effectively helps reduce swelling associated with post-operative inflammation or certain circulatory disorders.
2. Reduce pain and tension
Slow, steady movements have a calming effect on the nervous system. They help reduce pain and tension and promote an overall sense of lightness.
3. Prevent fibrosis
After certain procedures, particularly liposuction, areas of hardening may develop during the healing process. Lymphatic drainage helps soften the tissues and avoid the formation of fibrous tissue.
Better aesthetic results thanks to massage
The success of a surgical procedure does not depend solely on the surgeon’s technical skill; the postoperative phase is also essential. A better recovery leads to more harmonious contours, faster healing, and optimal final results.
By facilitating removal of cellular waste and improving nutrient delivery to cells, Vodder lymphatic drainage supports the natural processes of tissue repair and regeneration, which are particularly important during the post-operative period. These massages are especially recommended following liposuction, abdominoplasty, breast surgery, or facial procedures such as a facelift or blepharoplasty.
Vodder lymphatic drainage is therefore an essential complement to any cosmetic surgical procedure. By supporting the lymphatic system, it promotes a faster, more comfortable recovery and helps to enhance the final result. At Concept Clinic, MLD massages are performed in Geneva by our nurse, with 30+ years of experience.
